This season, the UConn men’s team finished with a record of 34 wins and 6 losses while the women’s team finished with 38 wins and 1 loss. Both teams showed lots of hard work throughout the year and gave tons of fans many memorable moments. The men’s team is coached by Dan Hurley and the women’s team is coached by Geno Auriemma. Both teams have a strong support system and a coach who really pushes them. The men’s team started the season by winning 74-61 over #14 Illinois on November 28th. The women started their season by winning 79-66 over #20 Louisville.
Both teams have key players on their squads. For the men, one of them being senior forward Alex Karaban who averaged 13.2 points a game. He finished his UConn career with a total of 1880 points (6th on UConn’s all-time scoring list). He is also a two-time national champion and holds the following records: All-time leader in wins (126), career starts (151), minutes played (4,906), and 3-pointers (292) at UConn.
For the women’s team, senior Azzi Fudd dominated her career finishing out with 1299 points. She averaged 14.7 points per game over her career, while shooting 42.2% from three point range. She was just selected #1 overall in the 2026 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings where she joins fellow Uconn legend Paige Bueckers.
During March Madness, the Men’s Huskies reached the championship game vs Michigan. Unfortunately they lost 69-63, but they wouldn’t have made it this far without the clutch freshman, Braylon Mullins, buzzer-beater against Duke to win the game and send the Huskies to the Final Four tournament.
The women’s team unfortunately lost it all in the final four this season. South Carolina defeated UConn 62-48 ending their undefeated season. This left fans in shock, with some claiming that “Azzi Fudds talent went away.” Sarah Strong led the Huskies with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. The women’s team began the season ranked #1 in the country.
Both teams succeeded because of teamwork, strong coaching from Dan and Geno, and support from the fans. Including the ones here at EHHS. Mr. Merola says “Alex Karaban had a hell of a career” and he hates to see him go. Other students’ thoughts about the women include “they could’ve won! They were too cocky thinking they were gonna win because they win every game!’
The UConn fans here at EHHS are excited for what next season brings, but it will never be the same without all of our favorite players returning.
