As just a freshman, first baseman Lily Esposito has already accomplished something many athletes spend years working toward: earning a spot on the Girls Softball All-SCC Second Team. While age and experience can often be advantages in high school sports, Lily proved that hard work, dedication, and determination can lead to success regardless of grade level.
“When I found out I made All-SCC Second Team, I was delighted that I made it as a freshman and I am very glad that I got to do it with my teammate Gabby Dion,” said Lily.
The journey to All-Conference recognition did not happen overnight. Lily first began playing softball in September of 2021, but she played baseball before that since she was 3 years old. Since then, she has spent countless hours developing her skills and learning the game.
“I started because I figured it was time to get away from baseball because I could go much farther in softball,” she said.

Throughout the season, Lily consistently demonstrated the effort required to compete at a high school level. In addition to regular team practices, she hits into her BowNet at home and goes to the Pit sometimes to hit front toss with her dad John. Lily also plays on a travel team during the summer called the Shoreline Breakers. Her goals for the season were to start, to perform as best as she could, and to show that age is just a number.
“Fixing my throwing with help from the coaches really helped me improve the most this season,” she said.
Like any athlete, however, she faced challenges along the way. One of the biggest obstacles she encountered was struggling to throw the ball well at the beginning of the season. As a freshman competing against older and more experienced athletes, she also had to adjust to the transition from eighth grade to facing eighteen year old pitchers.
Despite those challenges, she was able to overcome them by working on whatever she needed to during practice and getting feedback from her coaches and teammates.
In addition to her own hard work, Lily credits much of her success to the people around her. Her teammates helped by cheering her on in the dugout and helping her when she was struggling, while her family supported her through giving her some extra reps at home.
“I credit Coach Coyle the most because he would always talk to me when I was doing bad and would try to boost my energy when I was down,” said Lily.
When she learned he had earned All-SCC, her reaction was like the image to the right. The achievement represented not only a successful season but also the combination of years of effort and dedication.
“This achievement means a lot to me because I worked very hard for this,” she said.
Looking ahead, Lily hopes to play for Texas University one day and hopes to improve her first baseman skills as a whole. Although earning All-SCC as a freshman is an impressive accomplishment, she sees it as only the beginning of her high school softball career.
By combining talent, perseverance, and a strong support system, Lily answered the question of how she achieved All-SCC as a freshman. Through her support system, the effort that she put in outside of practice, and her 4 home runs and 9 doubles, she turned a goal into a reality and set the stage for future success.
