Over the last few years, New Haven style pizza has become a tourist-attraction and a hot debate. Which style of pizza is better: New York or New Haven?
Many critics have argued that the correct answer is definitely New York due to its affordability throughout the city and the history of pizza throughout New York City, but on the other hand New Haven has always been present in the pizza game and really started to make a name for itself due to the popularity it has grown thanks to famous pizza reviewer Dave Portnoy.
Portnoy, is the creator of Barstool Sports but he also goes around the country reviewing pizza and he posts his opinion on each location to his Youtube channel. Every time he has returned to the New Haven area he has given every place a 8.0 or higher which is a “monster score” in his books, which shows how much Dave really enjoys New Haven style pizza. Portnoy has said in multiple interviews that New Haven is the king of the crop for pizza in the U.S. He states it is “the place to be” to try the best pizza in the country. Portnoy’s presence in the pizza game has encouraged more and more people to travel to the state of Connecticut to try New Haven pizza, which has been overshadowed by New York in recent years.
EHHS sophomore, Yeriel Feliciano Yeriel stated “New Haven tends to be very thin and charred on the crust and New York has a puffier non burnt crust.” Matt Johnson recalls that, “New York and New Haven keep their pizzas in the oven at different temperatures and time lengths to obtain their specific taste.” Both Johnson and Feliciano responded “You can’t go wrong with the classic vibe of a New Haven pie.” Yeriel exclaimed, “As we know New Haven has the #1 pizza in the entire country.” Matt expressed, “New York is very enjoyable but it’s not a Sally’s or Modern Pizza good.” Sally’s and Modern are two New Haven staples that built the city’s reputation on pizza, Portnoy gave Sally’s a 9.2 and Modern an 8.8, respectively. Yeriel supported Matt’s claim that “Although both pies are relatively similar, I do believe that the New Haven pie outweighs the New York slice.”
What are your thoughts? What style do you prefer? Both New York and New Haven have some of the best if not the best pizza restaurants in the whole country. Opinions could be biased due to where people live, but you can’t deny the marvelous taste of New York or New Haven style pie. Let us know in the comments.
