The Moment is a film that stars and is produced by singer and songwriter, Charli XCX, and is directed by Aidan Zamiri. It’s a satire mockumentary that follows a fictionalized version of Charli XCX and her struggles navigating the complexities of fame and the pressures of the music industry while preparing for her arena tour debut of her album, Brat.
Personally, I really enjoyed this film. I thought it was very funny, while also being very vulnerable as well. Considering this film was Charli’s acting debut, she did an incredible job. Her performance was very genuine and it was so interesting to see her act as kind of a fake version of herself. The film was also very visually appealing, incorporating flashing lights and old colors to encapsulate Charli’s “party girl” persona.
Despite my own personal enjoyment of the film, being a fan of Charli XCX, it is definitely not for everyone. According to reviews from Letterboxd, many people found the comedy to be weak and “cringe”. Some also described it as underwhelming and not engaging enough for a mockumentary. People also mentioned how it seemed slightly shallow since it did not show what “Brat summer” truly was.
Overall, I really enjoyed this film. I thought that the acting was great and the humor was solid. However, it’s definitely not a film for everyone. Some find the film to lack depth and engagement. Depending on your interest in Charli XCX and taste in movies, this film will either be really enjoyable or a big disappointment.
