Concert choir is a class at EHHS taught by Mr. Wolf who started teaching the class four years ago in the 2022-2023 school year. The class size is increasing over the years with this year having about 30 kids in the concert choir.
Concert choir is a class where kids are encouraged to learn how to sing and have fun. Anybody who is interested in taking this class can take it, Mr. Wolf encourages kids to join the choir if they are interested, especially if you don’t know how to sing, so you can learn how to. Mr. Wolf says “You don’t take a Spanish class because you already know how to speak Spanish”, he encourages students to take the class so they can learn to sing.
The purpose of this class is to learn and improve in singing like you would take a spanish class to learn and improve your speech. When students join the class they start to prepare for the winter concert which happens in the first semester of the year. The winter concert is performed in December and the spring concert which happens in the second semester is performed in May. The concerts take a couple of months to prepare for and they prepare for them during class time. When deciding on how to pick songs for the concerts Mr. Wolf puts in a lot of thought and effort.
Wolf has curricular goals that he has for his students but also wants his singers to be challenged so they can become better, but not too challenged where they won’t be able to achieve their goal, which plays a factor into his decision on which songs to pick. When picking songs he makes sure they are a variety of different songs, meaning they sing both up beat and slow paced songs while making sure they are school appropriate and fun for the choir to sing. Students should expect to get grades for this class as it is a performance based class, their biggest grade being their concerts. Mr. Wolf wants his students to be able to understand and learn about how music functions in today’s society and he wishes that music was valued more in society, especially on an educational level.
