If you look up at the EHHS roof, you’ll spot a sea of shiny solar panels catching the sunlight, a bold step that’s turning our school into a leader in clean energy with big savings. This project isn’t just about going green; it’s about saving money and providing more funds for the school. The project, launched to address both sustainability and building maintenance, began with construction in late spring of last year and is expected to be fully completed within the next few months, slightly ahead of schedule.

The installation of the panels on the high school roof was part of a larger $9 million package deal that included new or upgraded roofs and solar panels for eight buildings: six school facilities and two town buildings. For our high school, the unique deal meant a new, advanced roof was provided along with the solar panels, all included in the overall solar contract.

The package allowed the district to avoid upfront costs. Payments are made through a 15-year municipal loan from Bank of America, with expected electricity savings covering the annual $200,000 payment.

Importantly, this investment did not impact the recent budget cuts or staffing decisions we have experienced lately. As Chief Operations and Fiscal Oversight Officer, Richard Caponera, explained, the project is designed to be fiscally responsible and self-sustaining, with the aim of lowering ongoing repair costs and directing future savings to benefit teachers and students.

The impact on the high school’s electric bill is expected to be dramatic. With nearly one megawatt of solar capacity installed, the school’s monthly electric bill, previously around $50,000, could drop to $0, and the school could actually earn nearly $1,000 a month. These savings will allow the district to reinvest in school infrastructure and student materials.

Beyond financial benefits, the shift to solar energy brings many environmental advantages. The district’s solar panels will help reduce the community’s carbon footprint.

Watching our school’s old, rocky roof become a field of shiny solar panels feels like a big moment for everyone here. It’s not just a change in what you see, it’s a sign that we’re moving forward, together, toward a brighter and more sustainable future. As we move forward in sustainability, we also make strides toward greater financial freedom, allowing us to fund more activities for the faculty and students.

Mr. Caponera’s statement serves as a memorable reminder of how innovative thinking can power both savings and sustainability for years to come.
