Flying Into the Future: Drone Technology Class

The drone technology class gives students a chance to try something new and learn hands-on skills. The main goal of the class is to teach students how to use drones and help them earn a certification to become a small commercial drone pilot. This certification can help students get jobs in the future, like filming events, working in real estate, or helping construction companies.

At East Haven High School, students don’t need any experience to join the class. They can sign up by talking to their guidance counselor. The class is best for juniors and seniors because you need to be at least 16 to take the certification test. The class is taught by Mr. Cole. In the class, students learn how to fly drones, control them, and take pictures or videos from the air.

A typical day or lesson includes students actually flying the drones themselves using equipment like the DJI RC-N3 controller. This hands-on practice helps students build real flying skills instead of just learning from notes. The class doesn’t use a lot of tools like a normal shop class. Students may use simple tools for a small project, but most of the time they focus on flying drones. They also learn how drones are used in real life. For example, police and firefighters use drones to find missing people or look in dangerous areas. Some drones can even detect heat to find people at night.
