You’ve probably heard about the Makerspace before, but do you really know what it is?
Makerspace has been around for about 9 years, serving the EHHS community as well as local and widespread businesses. Ms. Lutar, an English teacher, established the class and worked alongside a former Library Media Specialist. She teaches Makerspace to this day with Mrs. Robinson, the current Library Media Specialist. This class is able to fulfil your Mastery Based Diploma credit, which is your Capstone and a graduation requirement. Makerspace is a hands-on class where students learn how to run a business from the ground up and create products along with marketing them.
Students complete many orders from the community and other businesses while learning money management skills in order to manage productivity of all sales. Anything from clothing, signage, and accessories are customized using vinyl and Cricut machines. There are many independent projects for students to work on, which gives the class freedom and independence. Aside from creating products, students work on written assignments, productivity sheets to track new learning, and customer service skills. Mrs. Robinson and Ms. Lutar work together to model collaboration for students, which further supports student creativity and community within the class. Brainstorming and hearing everyone’s ideas are a key part of keeping motivation and a smooth workflow.
Students benefit from this class by learning executive skills, life skills, responsibility, and accountability. This class utilizes performance based grading and assessments which rely on the communication and collaboration between all students.
Makerspace is a fun class and provides an opportunity to gain new skills for your future, especially if you’re interested in having a business when you’re older. Mrs. Robinson has even gained experience and says, “It’s taken me some time to learn everything that I need to know, and I’m still learning. It’s been great, it’s creative and fun. It’s a cool job and it was easy to say yes to.”
