HOSA at EHHS is a student-led club that focuses on healthcare related activities. They meet every Thursday in Ms. Martin’s room to come up with fundraising ideas, prepare for competitions, and practice skills related to healthcare.
HOSA has done an extensive amount of fundraisers in the past and are continuing to fundraise. Some of the past fundraisers HOSA has done include a bake sale and a wear purple day for Alzheimer’s. The money earned from these fundraisers either is donated to research centers for health related causes, like Alzheimer’s and cancer, or is used to support members of the club when they go to competitions. Alongside these fundraisers, HOSA has also done an annual blood drive in April, which is for the entire East Haven community.
HOSA also has annual competitions that typically start in the Spring. These competitions are dedicated to showcasing healthcare related skills and could be competed by taking a multiple choice test, demonstrating skills, or both. Members of HOSA have competed in fields like forensic science, pharmacology, and veterinary science. In total there are over 103 events, but students are only allowed to pick one to compete in each year. HOSA members have used their meeting time to practice these skills. They’ve done CPR training and have practiced putting an IV in.
If you are interested in becoming a member of HOSA, you must show up to their meetings, especially at the beginning of the year, and pay a fee, which is currently $30. Once a member, you can also run for an officer position, which include president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and historian. The job of these positions is to help keep the meetings running smoothly. Ms. Martin says “It really is up to the students to run it. It’s student-led.” So while some members have an actual job to keep the meetings running, it’s still up to everyone to contribute.
