There is a new class being added to the 2024-25 school year at EHHS. It is exciting to hear about this new project from the Profettos. This class was created by the culinary teachers of EHHS, Mr. John Profetto and Mrs. Heather Profetto. Mr. Profetto said, “Mrs. Proffeto has been planning this her whole life.” Want to learn what this is all about? Want to know how to get into this class? Learn with me.

This new  class that is called “The Garden” was designed during the 2023-24 school year. The garden started from an idea that really began to take off when Mrs. Lisa Veleas began as a new assistant superintendent started in March. Mrs. Profetto shared, “[We] were talking to her about this great idea that we have thought about and she said it was a great idea, first they had to have a meeting about it, and they finally approved the garden for letting us construct the garden.” Mrs. Profetto knew it would be a lot of work and she decided to add some other teachers that wanted to be involved. The teachers that are involved are Mr. Fernandez and his class helped build the composting bin. They also had Mr. Callahan help us design the layout of the garden and he has a box that has all companion planting so certain plants are in certain boxes. Mrs. and Mr. Profetto share that they appreciate all of these teachers that are helping us create this class, and there are some teachers that are taking their time after school and bringing supplies from home. They aren’t just planting flowers in the garden, but they are also growing fruits and vegetables. “Ms. Hollingworth has a box of strawberries at home and her plants were expanding so she took her supply of plants to continue growing them in here.” Mr. Profetto says this garden is not for just them, everyone is invited.

Mrs. Profetto wanted to add something important to the EHHS community where everyone could feel included. They came up with this idea and the way they were going to get all of these supplies to plant and build the garden. Some of the supplies are from JC Farm in Durham, which is EHHS English teacher, Ms. Caturano’s family business. The Profettos share, “They were nice enough to help us. They were able to get amazing price and be able to use the money from the restaurant that they have also have in their classroom that they have also been extending it since the beginning of the year. We are looking forward for this new class!”
