This year, EHHS is turning homecoming into something bigger, brighter, and more exciting than ever before with its 2025 theme: “House of Balloons.” Inspired by The Weeknd’s mixtape, the theme mixes elegance, eeriness, and just the right amount of creativity to give students a night they won’t forget.
According to Mr. Neil Merola, a science teacher and the senior class advisor, planning for homecoming began back in early October. “After we finish discussing prom details, we shift gears into homecoming mode,” Merola explained. “The student council meets after school to brainstorm theme ideas, plan logistics, and talk about everything from ticket prices to setup times.”
The meetings are a mix of organization and imagination. The student council works hard to bring ideas to the table, while Merola helps guide them through what’s realistic within the school’s budget and time limits. Over the past four years, the council has been raising funds to ensure that events like homecoming are not only exciting but also financially feasible.
This year’s theme didn’t come easily. In fact, several other options were discussed before the final decision was made. Some of the alternatives included “Crystal Nights,” “Starry Night,” and even something “with clouds.” But ultimately, “House of Balloons” stood out because it felt fresh and unique compared to previous themes.
“The neon theme from two years ago didn’t go over very well,” Diana admitted, “We wanted something that felt more sophisticated and that everyone could get behind.” The Weeknd-inspired concept struck a balance between a fun party atmosphere and a stylish, modern vibe that appealed to the entire school.
Mr. Merola, who gives the final approval for all major event decisions, praised the council’s creativity and independence. “I mostly help them make sure the plan is doable,” he said. “They handle the design, the decorations, and the promotion. My job is to make sure everything stays on track.”
The student council has already been hard at work spreading the word. Promotion has been rolling out across social media platforms and through school emails, building excitement and curiosity.
While most feedback has been positive, a few students were initially confused by the name. “Some people thought it was going to be an actual house full of balloons,” joked one student council member. “But once we explained the reference to The Weeknd and the overall concept, people started to really get it.”
The event’s treasurer, Diana Melnyk, another senior council member, shared that careful budgeting has been a big focus this year.
“We have a decent budget thanks to fundraising, but we’re making sure every dollar goes toward decorations and experiences that make the night memorable,” they said. “The goal is to avoid any leftover debt while still creating an atmosphere that wows students when they walk in.”
With the decorations, music, and energy planned around the “House of Balloons” theme, homecoming night promises to be one to remember. From glowing lights and balloon displays to music inspired by The Weeknd’s R&B style, the student council hopes to capture the moody, exciting feel that made the artist famous.
Even though it’s just one night, the effort that goes into homecoming shows how much students care about making EHHS’s traditions special. “It’s really cool to see how much thought goes into everything,” said one senior. “It’s not just about the dance—it’s about bringing the school together.”
In the end, “House of Balloons” represents more than just a theme—it’s a reflection of the creativity and teamwork that define the East Haven High community. As the night approaches, one thing’s for sure: this homecoming is going to blow everyone away.
