Junior track and field sprinter Tyler Varveris broke three EHHS school records at the 40th Yale Interscholastic Track Classic on Saturday, January 11th. Tyler broke the records of the 55 meter dash and the 300 meter dash, which were both his own records. Tyler (First leg), Dante Rodriguez (Second leg), Aiden Esposito (Third leg), and Liam Gilson (Anchor leg), broke the 4×400 record with a total time of 3 minutes 35 seconds. Tyler ran his 55 meter dash at 6.57 seconds, the previous record being 6.60. He ran the 300 meter dash at 35.55 seconds, breaking the record by over a second with his previous record being 36.85 seconds. Tyler placed 4th in the 55 meter dash, 5th in the 300 meter dash, and the team placed 9th in the 4×400 meter relay.
Before a race, Tyler likes to make sure that he eats a good breakfast in the morning and spends his day visualizing his race and how he will run it. He shared, “For the 300, I get out hard and keep myself in front. Just maintain. Get a strong start and a strong finish, that’s the key to a PR and to breaking school records.” Tyler devotes himself to track all year long, doing workouts throughout the summer every day at the high school. However, before track comes school and his studies. Tyler says, “I make sure everything’s balanced in my life. I have to keep my grades up. In being a student athlete, being a student comes first.”
Last year, Tyler ran at New Balance Nationals in the 55 meter dash. Before the end of the season this year, Tyler hopes to qualify for the New Balance Nationals for the 300 meter dash. The qualifying standard is 35.3 seconds while Tyler’s current personal record is 35.5 seconds. Tyler says, “If I get my start right, I’m bound to make nationals. I’m going to be national-bound. That’s another bag in the books and that’s what it means to be a student athlete. Show up to class and show up on the track.”
