Seniors Pull Ahead in the Penny Wars Event

The class of 2023 has been hosting, Penny Wars, a fundraiser since the middle of October and it will end some time after homecoming. Penny Wars is a competition where students are separated by class (seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen), and collect points by putting certain amounts of money in their respective bucket. Pennies are worth 1 point, $1 bills are worth 100 points, and silver coins are worth their value in negative points. The winning class will receive an ice cream social during 4th block in December.

The class of 2023 will keep the proceeds to put towards senior events throughout the school year. Mrs. Martin, the class of 2023 advisor, brought the idea to the officers from her own high school experience: “This is a very famous fundraiser. My high school in northern Vermont did it back in 2000-2002 when I was there. Many teachers have heard of it, because they did it in their high schools.” The advisors and officers wanted to participate in a fundraiser that involved the entire EHHS community. “We’ve sent out email blasts, included the fundraiser information in morning announcements, and put signs up around the school,” says treasurer Izabella Olszewski. All students are allowed to place their money in whichever bucket they choose at any time. The buckets are kept outside the library so it’s easily accessible to students.

Although the class officers and advisors have done their best to advertise the event, they still need more student participation and school spirit. “Not many students have money with them during school, so they aren’t able to donate,” says Ms. Spinelli, 2023 class advisor. There have been limitations with this fundraiser because it is only during school hours, but the officers are doing their best to motivate students. An ice cream social will be awarded for the class with the most points. Mr. DeNuzzo chose the prize and the school will be funding the social, so the money doesn’t come from the classes proceeds. Currently the senior class is in lead, with the juniors following behind them. If you haven’t donated you have till November 30th to support the class of 2023.
