The Guilford Grizzlies Girls Hockey team is a co-op ice hockey team with players from East Haven, Guilford, North Branford, and Coginchaug High School. So far this season, they have won 4 games, lost 14, and tied 1.
Several girls from the team feel that their games deserve more attention and excitement from their peers. They believe that increased support and attendance would not only boost their spirit but also create a more thrilling atmosphere for everyone. The team hopes to see more of their peers in the audience, supporting them and increasing their excitement levels and adrenaline.
Coach Rick explained how the attendance at the girls’ hockey game went from only the family of the players attending to family, friends, and other students. He said, “Girls’ hockey gained popularity throughout the years, increasing attendance at the girls’ game.”
Some key strategies the team uses to keep a positive environment and attitude and incorporate their chemistry on the ice is doing many team bondings such as bowling, team dinners, and talking about one thing they are good at and need to work on. Player Avery Torres said, “The team is a positive environment. I always feel like I can trust anybody on the team with anything that is going on in my life. They are all so kind and caring for each other.”
The Grizzlies have been a young team in recent years, so to get them to excel in their skills on the ice the coaching staff supports the team in reaching their full potential by enforcing hard drills and punishing them during practice. “Our coaches encourage us to be the best we can be on the ice. They push us during practice to work as hard as possible,” said EHHS player Emily Forrest.
Coach Rick and several players expressed their passion being their overall goal for the team is to win more games and championships.
