Starting this fall, the EHHS security guards have been throwing out any food brought into school by students who are arrive tardy in the mornings because of a new school policy. The reason this all started was students attendance and timeliness to class. The thought process included: How do you have time to wait in line at Dunkin’ in the mornings but be late to class?
EHHS principal, Mr. Vincent DeNuzzo, was the one who came up with this idea because he noticed these solutions and all of these problems throughout the last school year. He said, “One of our goals is improving both student attendance in every class and decreasing tardiness to school as well.” They started to look at some different things that we could do so to try to improve some of those things and “one of the things that we saw was the number of students that come to school late who might be having and holding [a coffee].”
It’s been a very common problem if you stand in the lobby after 7:25 am in the last few years. Mr. DeNuzzo reiterated that if you have enough time to go wait in a line to get a coffee, then you are able to come to school before the bell rings. “We’re not saying you can’t have Dunkin. You just can’t have it after 7:25 [if you’re late].” If you are a senior and have the privilege to come for second block, you are able to bring coffee if you’re not late to your class.
This new rule has helped some of the attendance go up because some students are
aware that this could happen, there have been some situations where students have gotten their Dunkin’ thrown out for not following this new rule. However, the new tardy sweeps have made an even bigger impact on students really trying to get to class on time and both have helped a lot. The morning food rule wasn’t our only new rule this year and all of the new rules added up to having a better year for teachers and students. Students who refuse to throw out their Dunkin’ have not yet become a problem. Mr. DeNuzzo suggests, “Plan accordingly. Leave the house five minutes earlier, get in line, and order it through the app so you can just go in and pick it up. There are ways you could do it so you’re not waiting in line and then getting to school late and get it thrown out.” Dunkin’, founded in 1950, is the largest coffee and donuts brand in the United States, with more than 13,200 restaurants in nearly 40 global markets. Follow this new rule to not get your Dunkin’ thrown out and your money wasted.
