Having a job while in school can be stressful; however, many students find it necessary to have jobs while also being full-time students. About 30% of students will have jobs according to Walden University. Students will always have different opinions regarding having a job in high school; some students will find it beneficial while others find it challenging. There will always be positives and negatives to having a job while still in high school.
Students who hold jobs while also being full-time students may find it difficult to manage their lives. Jobs might make it harder for students to perform well academically due to the lack of free time to complete their school assignments. EHHS senior, Nina Marreiros states, “Having a job can be very challenging at times because you might have work when you need to do assignments.” Overall having a job can be difficult when balancing the workload of school and a job.
Additionally, the excess workload can cause a lot of stress to the student and can hinder their ability to have a social life. Going right from school to work does not give the student any time to themselves as well.
On the other hand, having a job can be beneficial. It may give you a broader set of skills for future job opportunities. Walden University believes that if students hold a job they will learn the value of money and the relationship between earning money and education.
In EHHS, there is a work-study credit that can be earned by having a job. Many students do not take advantage of this credit because they do not fully understand what it means. It would take a bit of the school workload off and make it more manageable to work as a student in high school. By having a job, you can ask your guidance counselor whether or not it would be possible for you to earn credit through it. EHHS Vice Principal, Mr. Anthony Russell said if a student works a minimum of 60 hours they can earn a half credit and if you work a minimum of 120 hours you will earn a full credit. The work study teaches students valuable skills that they may not get while just being a student.
Overall, students who have jobs while being in high school often find that it has a negative impact on their lives. They feel as though they do not have enough time to complete assignments and this causes a lot of excess stress. Although it may be hard to manage a job while in school, there are a lot of opportunities for students to take advantage of the skills they have learned from their job.
