Marvel Rivals is a competitive hero shooter developed by NetEase Games based on the characters from different Marvel series. In the game, you team up in teams of 5 and play game modes like Convoy, Domination, and Convergence, where the goal is to beat the other team. You can play as many different heroes who have different abilities. Some of these characters work together to be stronger and combine their abilities.
I played the Marvel Rivals game for the first time when I was preparing to review it for this article, and in all honesty I was ready for it to be terrible. I used to play Overwatch avidly, so this seemed like another cheap copy to me. However, after I played for a few hours, my expectations were blown away, and my previous thoughts were changed. The game still needs some work, but it already surpasses Overwatch in many ways.
- Overwatch 2 has about 130,000 current players, while Marvel Rivals blows that out of the water with 530,000.
- In Overwatch 2, players have to come up with their own combos and interactions, the heroes don’t have interactions in the game. In Marvel Rivals, there are team-ups, where different characters enhance each other’s abilities or work together.
- Overwatch 2 feels more satisfying to play, and the fights are faster, however, it’s also much harder to understand what’s going on in your fights.
Once everything is taken into consideration, I find both games fun to play. Considering the player base and the combination of abilities, I find myself going back to Marvel Rivals.
Marvel Rivals is a
7/10
Its good mechanics and player base give it points. However, it’s also just a copy-paste of other games following the same style, game modes, etc. Not everything can be original, but originality gains more points for me, and Marvel Rivals isn’t a new concept.
