The One Who Started It All!
Mr. Chris Hemingway is the Reference, Archival, and Local History Librarian/Notary Public at the library. He has worked at Hagaman for 30 years, starting right out of high school. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, he noticed that many people have not been visiting the library as much. As a way to get people back, he and other library staff have begun organizing various clubs and activities. One of the most recent clubs he has organized is the upcoming Vinyl Club.
Why’d it Start?
Mr. Hemingway was inspired to create this club after walking through a music aisle in a store and realizing they had vinyl records from recent music to older music. He has noticed that there has been a revival of interest in vinyl records,
especially among the younger generations. He states, “I don’t know if Taylor Swift had anything to do with the vinyl record revival, but in 2021, [she] sold about 100,000 vinyl record copies of her album Evermore in one week.” Mr. Hemingway noted that he wants to use this nostalgia and new interest in vinyl to bring more people back to the library. It’s also part of his efforts to introduce more music into the library’s atmosphere.
What to expect!
Mr. Hemingway noted that the meeting will be very informal and drop-in, making it accessible and comfortable for everyone in attendance. There will be displays of vinyl books and records, YouTube videos on the history of vinyl records and how they’re made, as well as vinyl pricing and value. Overall, Mr. Hemingway believes the club will appeal to all music lovers, nostalgic people, and those interested in learning more about the history and value of vinyl records in a welcoming and community setting.
When and Where?
The Vinyl Club meeting will be at Hagaman Memorial Library, located at 227 Main St., East Haven, CT 06512, at 6 p.m. The meeting itself will be held in the community room found near the children’s area from the back entrance.
What to Bring?
All you truly need to bring is yourself and an open mind! If you would like, you can bring vinyls with you to share with the other members of the club, or even vinyl books, stories, etc.
The Library Itself!
Mr. Hemingway encourages everyone to visit the library! With all the clubs and programs they run, there is something for everyone. Hagaman also doesn’t only have books, but movies, DVDs, and so much more. For example, every Friday there is a teen advisory group for anyone to attend! They also have community service opportunities at the library, which is always a great add-on, especially for high school students. Plus, when you get a library card, you can sign up for apps like Libby or Hoopla and get access to loads of e-books, movies, and music!
Come for the Fun!
If you’re looking for a fun opportunity to meet music lovers or vinyl collectors, come to the Vinyl Club at Hagaman Memorial Library on November 7th at 6 pm!
