Ms. Bohan joined the EHHS Science Department in December 2024 to replace Mr. Jake Callahan after he left. After spending a year interning and teaching as a substitute in Branford, she found her home with the EHHS community.
Teaching was not initially part of Ms. Bohan’s career path. She attended Boston University for an undergraduate degree, studying neuroscience and biology, focusing on Pre-Med with the plan to become a doctor or PA (Physician Assistant). It was not until she began a hospital internship, working and volunteering in hospitals that she realized she “didn’t love the medicine part.” Taking time to regroup and put together a plan to have a science-based career outside of the medical field, she quickly learned that she enjoyed interacting with students.
Ms. Bohan said, “I took some time, I reflected, [and] I really love learning. I love science and helping people, so I was trying to find some sort of career that aligned with all of that. I found that teaching was absolutely perfect because I was able to spread my passion for science while also helping kids and being in an environment that was happy.”
Ms. Bohan has had mentors and inspirational figures that have motivated her. Her mom was a teacher and someone she looked up to, but in her own AP Biology class she was taken by all the hands-on learnings, labs and interactions, and aspires to teach like that. She has a great love for this profession and works hard to navigate the challenges and behind the scenes work that goes into lesson planning, keeping students engaged and inspired, and making learning fun. She says, “there is a lot of creativity which is something that I love. Everyone has their own teaching style and that comes through in this profession.” Many students agree appreciate that “[S]he is very cool and helpful, and I really like how she always will answer any questions you have because a lot of teachers will make assignments that are very hard if you don’t understand the material but she is always so easy to talk to and catch you up on things,” said one student.
Being able to create her own lesson plans that align with the course content gives Ms. Bohan the opportunity to develop course material for her students that helped her fall in love with science as a student herself. Ms. Bohan acknowledges that each student has their own learning style and works hard to adapt to these differences and “makes sure that each lesson meets everybody’s needs. It is something that is challenging but definitely doable…it is important to create student-centered learning in a way that makes sense to them.”
She works hard to ensure students can ask questions, share ideas, and contribute to the discussion and hands-on learning her classes offer.
She is currently enrolled in a master’s program for secondary biology and will be able to teach grades 7 through 12 upon completion.
She teaches biology and general science and has found that after teaching with her this fall, Mrs. Florio is her “work bestie.”
You can find Ms. Bohan during the week in S317. If you haven’t met her yet, pop in and say hi!
