EHHS is proud to announce the launch of a new club that fosters inclusivity, cultural exchange, and community engagement: the International Club. Led by former president and EHHS senior Yerson Daniel Palma and with the support of assistant superintendent Mrs. Lisa Veleas, this initiative promises to create a welcoming environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
Daniel, the driving force behind this club, shared his passion for creating a new supportive environment for newcomers to EHHS. He outlined the club’s objectives, which include community service, event planning, leadership development, and mentorship. Drawing from his own experience as a newcomer to the education system when he first came here, Daniel expressed his desire to be a resource for other students going through the same challenges as he once did. “When I arrived here I wished I would find someone who helped me understand the education system and its characteristics,” Daniel reveals. His main goal is to ensure that every newcomer in this community feels supported, welcomed, and empowered to thrive in academic and personal success.
Many former participants from the international club, and staff members, among others, have described Daniel as a resilient, responsible, serious, organized, and well-aware individual who has every quality that a leader requires.
From a Capstone Project to a Reality
The foundation of the International Club was a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders. Daniel’s initial proposal garnered support from various departments within the school, including family engagement, ESL, and guidance when it all started as Daniel’s capstone project that was based on a club proposal that would benefit the community. “Thanks to Ms Robinson and her help in the capstone presentation I was able to attract some parent’s attention and also the staff on where I was able to present my project. After this, I talked with the principal Mr DeNuzzo. I gave him my ideas and how this club could help the international community in the school. I also talked with the family engagement department, ESL dept, and guidance. All agreed with my idea.” Later on with the assistance of Ms. Veleas and other school administrators, the club was officially established, paving the way for a myriad of opportunities for students to connect, learn, and grow.
Mrs. Veleas expressed her enthusiasm for the International Club, citing the need for students to connect as one community. “The importance of breaking down barriers that can lead to feelings of exclusion and the club has the potential to bridge gaps between different groups within the school,” she emphasized. Mrs. Veleas sees the club not only as a means of fostering unity within the school, but also as an opportunity for students to connect with the larger community, enrich their educational experience, and prepare them for future aspirations.
Join the movement! The international club welcomes all students who are eager to embrace diversity, engage with their community, and make a positive impact, whether you are a newcomer to EHHS or longtime students looking to expand your horizons. The international club offers a supportive environment where everyone is valued and respected. As they embark on this journey of cultural exchange and community building we can remember the words of Mrs. Veleas, “It’s easy for students to feel like they belong in one group but I encourage everyone to break down barriers.” Together we can celebrate diversity and unite as one East Haven community. Join us and be part of something special. The international club awaits you!
