The Maritime Program (“Ship 100”) is our school’s Sea Scout Ship. They regularly participate in activities and go on trips to grow their leadership skills and gain experience in the maritime field.

Ship 100 is our school’s Sea Scout ship. Sea Scouts is a group under Boy Scouts of America (BSA), and like how Boy Scouts have troops, Sea Scouts have ships. Troops and ships are groups of scouts who come together in an area to meet and do their activities.

The program started last year because of Ms. Pompano’s enthusiasm for the marine sciences. She worked with Paul Lukas, the Sea Scout coordinator for CT. Mr Oshana says, “The program is connected with the Scouts of America, the U.S. Coast Guard, Electric Boat, and the U.S. Navy.”

The Maritime Program often goes on field trips, which are funded by BSA. Some examples of these trips include:

  • US Coast Guard Base to tour and learn about maritime opportunities.
  • The US Naval Base to tour the Nautilus Submarine, and then tour an active nuclear submarine.
  • University Of Bridgeport.
  • Mystic Seaport.
  • And most recently, the Port Jefferson Ferry to see the ship and how it works, and to go on a ride.

The Maritime Program is provided with a boat for use, however, Mr. Oshana is still working on finding out where it is and how to use it.

They have also built remote control vehicles called Sea Perches and tested them at the University of Bridgeport’s pool. Amiya Harry-Esposito says, “My favorite activity that I have done so far was building Sea Perches, which were provided to us by the Navy”. The students learned how to solder, which is a difficult skill that takes time to develop.  They also became certified in CPR through the program.

They are always looking for new members who are willing to learn about new things and grow as a leader. In order to join, listen to the announcements at the beginning of the next school year. There is no cost to be in the program, however, there is a deadline to apply to be a Sea Scout, so you have to join at the beginning of the school year.
