In 2025, EHHS built a Virtual Golf room in the upper west wing for teachers, staff, and the students on the golf team. Virtual golf is a simulated golf experience that allows people to play on virtual courses using real clubs and balls, where a simulator captures the shots, data, and the ball’s flight. The virtual golf room was built by Mr. Walraven and Joe Tomasello, who ordered the parts, like PVC pipes and turf mats, and were able to put it all together inside room W304. Also, the maintenance guys painted it, and Mr. Stevens did graphics and posters. They had to order a new projector to go with the software system. It costs between 3,500 and 4,000. The money was funded by the golf team; they do a tournament every year at the end of the year to raise money, so they used that money, and a group of teachers put money of their own as well as partially EHHS and the athletic department funding.
Mr. Narracci and assistant coach Mr. Tolla coach the EHHS golf team. This year, they have 5 girls on the team. Now, when the weather is poor and rainy, they still have access to practice and go to the room. Mr. Tolla said the room is great for the winter when outdoor golf courses are closed. It allows him to keep his swing consistent, so when spring comes, he can go on to the course and play well. For golf team students, the equipment provides excellent feedback so they can improve rapidly.
Something Mr. Narracci wants EHHS students and parents to know is to hopefully get more kids on the team this year and to get more kids out. You can’t have a large team. In the last few years, there have been about eight members, but Mr. Narracci agrees that you can probably have up to 10 students on a team easily. He shares that golf is a sport you can do for the rest of your life. He plays with guys in their 80s and 90s. It’s a hard skill to learn, so you have to put some time into it. So he tells anyone that’s interested in playing to go take some lessons first and come into the season with a little bit of an idea of how the swing works, and from there, you can build upon that. Mr. Tolla said, The room is really cool and the only people who can use it have a special code.
The difference from going real golfing is that you don’t have the elements of wind to mess with your swing and you’re hitting off a mat, as opposed to hitting off grass. It is different from playing outside, but it’s the closest thing you can do when you can’t be outside. They also have different types of mats where you’re in higher grass and sand.
Mr. Naracci has also been golfing for 30 years, and Mr. Tolla has been playing golf seriously for about 10 years. He tried it as a kid, but never played much until recently.
Naracci said Tolla needs the practice more than anybody because Tolla loses money all summer long.
