Can’t Fake It
Rating: ★★★★½
“Can’t Fake It” is a song that discusses the frustrations of being stuck in a cycle of wanting to leave a relationship that’s not working anymore while still being deeply attached to her lover. She wants to pretend everything is fine because of the intense love she feels, but she “can’t fake it” and pretend everything in their relationship is fine. Throughout my first listen, I noticed that the song gave off a similar vibe to early 2010s Disney and Nickelodeon music featured on shows like Victorious.
The lyrics and the song’s topic truly feel like something Tori (Victoria Justice) would sing on Victorious with Andre (Leon Thomas III playing the instrumental in the background. The fun pop beat makes me want to jump up and dance like nobody is watching. Her vocals throughout the song are amazing, and throughout the adlibs and background vocals, she makes all of the notes sound so easy! The song is very fun, very girly, and just an overall great song to dance to. One of my favorite things in music is when the final chorus starts with little to no instrumental, then immediately picks back up, and this song does that! I think it makes the final chorus blend well with the song and not make it feel like the song is too repetitive. In the second verse, Freya sings, “I just miss thе days when everything/Was so simple/When I wasn’t questioning how you felt for me/Maybe I’m naïve, but it felt so easy.” Throughout this verse, Freya discusses feeling happier when she is oblivious to her partner’s lack of love or effort for their relationship, rather than noticing the patterns of the bit of attention or love she receives.
In the chorus, the lines, “Caught up in the mess I’m making/Can’t let you go and it’s so frustrating,” really show her frustration and annoyance in the fact that she can’t give the person up, even though she knows that keeping them around won’t help her at all. Similarly, the next lines, “Take it too far/Break my own heart/Wanna say it’s over but I just can’t fake it,” shows how she is breaking her own heart by continuing to stay with this person and can’t even fake or entertain the idea of pretending everything is fine. I enjoy this song a lot and think it’s a fun song to blast in the summer while by the pool. The only reason I took off half a point was because the lyrics are pretty basic and don’t speak to anything besides the frustration of staying in a relationship that is no longer working but not being able to let go. However, I don’t think that every single song should have an extremely deep meaning, I just prefer a song that has lyrics with a bit less repetition or lyrics with different devices used. (Such as songs with double entendres, similes/metaphors, and more figurative language.) Overall, I think this song is incredible, especially as Freya is only 15, and has talent like she’s been doing this for a while.
