The East Haven Adult Education Learning Center has a significant impact on students, parents, and the community as a whole. The program started about 25 years ago and currently has about 200 students and 15 staff members.
They offer a very wide variety of classes such as GED, ESL, citizenship, lots of intro to computer classes, cookie decorating classes, ect. They will start offering a family literacy program that will be for adult students that have children. Adult education students who are raising young children can come in and participate in other family literacy classes that will help improve their relationship with their kids.
Adult Ed just resumed offering babysitting services to daytime students to accomodate more adult students who want to continue their education. The schools is also trying to increase the English as a Second Language (ESL) program from one night to two. They are also trying to develop a family literacy program working with Overbrook School.
Adult students can register online through the EHAE Google Site and look for updates on Facebook. There’s an enrichment program to go on day trips and take enrichment classes that you have to pay for as well.
Jean Copeland, the facilitator, says she thinks this benefits our community in many different ways. It helps people complete high school education because it is hard to move forward without a diploma. They offer English language services, classes that prep students to become U.S citizens, and give students opportunities to explore creativity, learn new skills, and bond with others.
