Wicked made its big screen debut in November 2024. The first half of an anticipated two-part series brought Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba to Oz and tells the story of how the future Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West were once friends.
The film took the stage show, a Broadway hit for nearly 20 years, and brought it to life with a cinematic adaptation of fantasy, music, friendship, betrayal, and a trip down the yellow brick road.
The Wizard of Oz has been a classic in many households, so to see Wicked quickly turn into a phenomenon and tell the story of unlikely friendships kept the storyline interesting. The movie targets many audiences, making it family-friendly and one for all ages.
Wicked has been streaming on platforms like Peacock, with other digital releases on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and even has a sing-along version and making of Wicked for those who just can’t get enough.
Part two is scheduled for release in theaters in November 2025 and I am sure it will be just as ‘popular” as the first.
I personally thought that the music was fun and interesting, but so long. Half of the movie was singing, which I don’t know what I expected from a musical, but this movie was the most musical-filled musical I’ve seen. But it was always refreshing seeing Glinda and Elphaba start as enemies and slowly turn into friends while learning things from each other. The characters were really interesting to watch because of their unique personalities, including the talking goat.
